Choosing the right motorcycle policy is a lot like choosing the right bike. You want it to fit your needs and the way you ride.
Most states require a minimum amount of liability coverage. Other coverages are usually optional, so it helps to know your options.
- Liability
- Covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to others. It doesn't cover you or your motorcycle. Ask whether your policy includes guest passenger liability, which protects you if a passenger is injured.
- Collision
- Covers damage to your motorcycle when you collide with another vehicle or object, minus your deductible, usually up to the bike's book value.
- Comprehensive
- Covers damage from something other than a collision, such as fire, theft or vandalism, minus your deductible, usually up to the bike's book value.
- Additional equipment
- Most policies cover only factory parts. Chrome, custom paint, trailers and sidecars need added equipment coverage.
- Uninsured motorist
- Pays for medical treatment, lost wages and other damages if a driver with no insurance hits you. Ask whether it includes damage to your bike.
- Underinsured motorist
- Applies when the other driver has insurance, but not enough to cover your damages.
